Title: MOAB 2020!
Post by: timatoe on September 28, 2019, 10:06:21 AM
I know none of you guys are really interested  :knock:, but I'm planning to head back to Moab spring of 2020.  Since I've been going it seems the weather is a little too unsettled and nighttime temps are colder than I'd like through April.  The first week of May seems to be about perfect as it's not too hot yet in the day and the nights aren't typically too cold.

With that being said I'd like to go the first ten days of May but Sean thinks work should take priority and can't make it then.  So, how would May 13-23/24 sound?  The only downside I see to those dates is the return drive is over Memorial Day weekend.

I know it's early but maybe we can get some dates hammered out this way and get to planning.

You know I'm in. I'll have 1 passenger. Perhaps a few others with their own rigs. :2thumbsup:  :cheers2:

I was planning on moab in 2020 around that same time, but it sounds like our plans are changing to Sand hollow instead.  ill figure out the details.

I would like to check that out at some point as well.  I heard that's getting to be a popular place to go.

If  those dates work for Sean, then as far as I know, those dates work for me, too.  That would be 3 rigs. I've been asking/telling people about it, but as of now I still have an empty seat. Larry 'might' want to go, but too early. Most likely Tim and I will have open seats.

Ran Swamp lake earlier this summer...pretty tough... but no carnage. But might need to rebuild a couple CA joints. Lots of noise. And my caster is waaaaay off. Wondering if that is part of it? Prolly work on that next week. Had knee surgery and still a bit gimpy.

My buddy Dave wants to go... seems work always gets in the way. We'll see. He wants to bring his Ford Raptor. I told him he better get a heavy rear bumper and some kind of sliders/rockers... me thinks he'll need them!   :knock:

Will, stop playing with all those 2wd cars and focus on the Jeep!

Post by: timatoe on October 11, 2019, 04:48:14 PM
Is that the same guy that brought a Raptor before?

Dan mentioned going.  He's got a 5th wheel so if he brings that he may not be able to bring his Jeep.

^Yup, same guy. He wants to bring his daughter this time... his youngest. (18)   I was planning on camping to save a couple bucks, but he may want to share the Motel again? We'll see.

Here's another thought. Leave Moab a couple days early and spend a couple days in Sand Hollow. It's on my way home and the rest of you can just shoot up 95 @ Vegas to go home. Thoughts?? :knock: :dunno:

As you know, I said 15 trips to Moab was enough for me. Grace says "who are you kidding, you're going". She knows me well. I'm sure by spring I'll be itching to go. Sooooo, maybe.
I might try a pair of those Explorer springs up front to soften the ride. I can't let it flex too much with short drive shafts though. I will have to test the setup in Moab, right?

Well, Doug, if we were to try out Sand Hollow, you could count that as #1.

Maybe go there first so all you guys would have the usual straight shot home after Moab??

Post by: timatoe on October 13, 2019, 06:15:05 PM
If we were to go to Sand Hollow, we could take 95 from Vegas to Tonopah then hit 376 to Kingston (or just push through).

That is right Doug. You already know how it should handle so it's a great place to test out new equipment.

Is there any chance that we could move those dates either up a week or back a week because the two weeks I would have to takeoff would end up giving me the whole month off from work and I donít think my work would allow me to do that.
That being said if moving it conflicts with someone elseís schedule who can already commit to going then just leave it there because I canít 100% commit right now.

Will, stop playing with all those 2wd cars and focus on the Jeep!

Assessing what Iíve got to work with.  The good:  arb front, Detroit rear, 5.38 gears, beadlocks.  The so-so:  its in half ton d44 and 9Ē with 15Ē wheels.

Can get maxxis in 38s for 15Ē wheels but not so hot for highway and too much for these axles?  Either that or 37s...

I'm pretty open, Sean had some conflict with earlier, I would suggest pushing back a week rather than forward.  I'll try to remember to check the events calendar, don't want to end up there during something huge (Like Jeep Safari) because we'll play hell getting camp sites etc.  Safari is in april but there are other big events.

I've had no real issue with 37's on my front 44 but it's a HD Ford 3/4 ton 44.

K. Was gonna chime in so we could talk about the dates... guess you all beat me too it. Would like to get them semi dialed in 'cause I need to make motel reservations. Prolly be a mix and match go around... camp a couple then motel it the rest of the time.

And I was thinking... depending on how the dates pan out... if we leave mid week like we tend to do, then it may not be a good idea to hit sand hollow first (or at all) since the guys camping @ Kens lake have a better chance of getting good camp sites mid week. Stopping at sand hollow might put us closer to the weekend and sites may fill up? What do you guys think?

K. Need you guys to chime in. Motel is already booked for one week in May. They are getting ready to close for the winter season. So I would like to get our dates figured out so I can find out if the motel is available and book it before they close.

Yeah

Sean can't do the first week of May because of a training he has to attend, so I figured the week of the 13th but Dan can't do that week and said a week earlier or later would be better.  The only thing I see scheduled in Moab during that time is a Nissan Offroad event from the 19th to the 24th.  I don't imagine they would be anymore impactful than the Rover group, likely not even as big as the Bronco group either.

The only thing is we start getting toward the end of the school year pushing to the end of May and then people might start getting committed to other family things....

K. I just remembered that last week in May is our anniversary. 28th.  So I'll have to bug out prudy early... like prolly Tuesday some time.
I can leave earlier the prior week if anyone else can go earlier?  :dunno:
Title: Re: MOAB 2020!
Post by: RockWoRM on November 12, 2019, 05:46:02 AM
Talked to my friend Dave and he can only get a week off work. So the last week doesn't really work out if I had to bug out Tuesday. 3rd week makes more sense  Since Dan hasn't chimed in lately... can he do the 3rd week??
Title: Re: MOAB 2020!
Post by: Mase58 on November 12, 2019, 09:39:43 AM
With that class at the end of April and a possible trip to Boston at the beginning of June, May 13-24 does work best for me. If that's when we do it I hope Dan can make it work.
Title: Re: MOAB 2020!
Post by: RockWoRM on November 12, 2019, 01:31:58 PM
So Sean... get/see any Elk!?  :knock:

Yeah, the original dates work best for me also. But, maybe Dan can chime in on his plans? Sounded like he could only get the last 2 weeks of May off?? Maybe we could do 16-26 (or a little longer for the rest of you) if that would help??

Or... we all scrap those dates and go during EJS!!!

I can do the first and second week of May or the third and fourth week of May if I take the second and third week of May off that will end up give me the whole month off and I donít think my work can have me gone that long I work a 14 and seven schedule if that makes sense
Title: Re: MOAB 2020!

But like I said in my original post you guys I believe are more 100% committed I still am not still too far out to commit 100% so donít plan around me so much I will do what I can if you guys are locked in for those dates go for it.
Title: Re: MOAB 2020!
Post by: RockWoRM on November 16, 2019, 11:55:18 AM
What say you Tim?

If we stick to the original dates I'm wondering if Dan can do that 3rd week... if he does go.>? He mentioned taking 2 weeks, but does he have to... or only just take a week? Will and Dave are only doing a week b/c of work (3rd), and before I retired I usually only did a week. Juz wondering.
Title: Re: MOAB 2020!
Post by: timatoe on November 16, 2019, 02:46:02 PM
I think the original dates work the best for everyone, but I don't want to nix anyone out either.  I'll have an open seat so if Dan wanted to just make the trip for a week sans Jeep he could ride with me and we'll do all the crazy insane stuff then, you know like Widow Maker and the death launch on Moab Rim.

Anywho, since it sounds like we're set on the dates... did you want to start a thread on JF? IIRC the guys from Co. usually went these dates, where we were always earlier. Maybe we can hook up this time?

I may too, have a empty seat now and again... if Dave dares to test the Raptor! Also thinking about pulling the hard top for this run. I have a bone to pick with the Pickle!!!

A week sounds fine, Iíll see what I can do, as long as someone can save me a spot. A week will probably go over better with both bosses anyway. Work and home 😝
Title: Re: MOAB 2020!
Post by: timatoe on November 16, 2019, 06:17:29 PM
Timing is everything for the spots.  I think we're gonna try and stay in the middle "RV" section this year since the camp host was a bit miffed we took all the "tent" sites last year.  Mid-week arrival is best, but if there's a spot on a Wednesday and you expect to arrive Thursday we can snag one.

Are you planning to push to that same exit on 70 or was that too much driving? Wasn't that Wed night and we checked into Ken's on Thurs morning. This year a day earlier? Cool with me (if I go).  ;D

That was a good way to go, just need to leave here a bit earlier.  I like being closer in the morning for sure.  I'm cool with a day earlier too.

Yeah, I can leave a day earlier too.  :cheers2:

And if Dan is able to make it, I can get a spot with my geezer card @ half price which was only $10 last year. So if we had to hold it a couple/3 days it wouldn't be that much.

Title: Re: MOAB 2020!
Post by: timatoe on November 17, 2019, 02:11:44 PM
The plan would be to leave early Wednesday and drive most of the way, stopping a couple hours shy of Moab.  That gets us there early Thursday morning with better ability to snatch spots and not trying to do it Wednesday night in the dark.  I wouldn't be opposed to leaving Tuesday though.  Early doesn't need to be 0400 but before 0900 like we left last year.  If you come up with us, there's no need to meet us here, we could meet at the Walmart in Fallon (we'll need fuel by then) or anywhere really.

Trying to make mine Pritchett-capable.  It had gotten a bit much for my TJ on 35s but hopefully an LJ on 37s is enough.  Will need to see how Jeep is doing and how driving a stick is going for me though.

I'm traveling solo from the south... so driving alone not that big a deal. I'd rather have a buddy riding along or course, but it is what it is. Dave will be meeting me there and Will will be meeting there by the weekend. If it suits your work better to only take off that 3rd week, then meeting us there works fine. Like we said... we can save you a spot or you can have mine since I will be moving over to the rental w/Dave and Will on the weekend.

I'm ok with that too. Figured if I'm gonna set up a tent, may as well have it for a couple days.

I like that spot we stayed last year overnight on the drive down. I agree with Tim, being closer in the AM is way better. Side question, I know the side by sides can get an OHV reg. for the road, can buggies get the same providing they have al the required lighting.

I don't know either.  There used to be signs up around some of the trail, like Hells Revenge, saying specifically that vehicles on the roadway had to be registered for road use.  The link Doug gave has good info, it would look like as long as it has all the requirements including insurance for street use it would be good.

I know it a long ways off as far as chatting about trails, but I was playing around on google earth and found a trail off 313 called Hell Roaring Rim Trail. It's not in my second edition book. Wondering if it's in the 3rd?  Never heard of it. I was just looking for easy stuff to do the first couple days before everyone gets there. Thinking Schafer switch backs b/c I've never done them and then found this one.   :cheers2:

A friend who wants to go is trying to get his buggy completed by then. If he can he would prefer to drive it to the trails rather than tow it. it will be "Green Stickered" here at home. Looking at the link Doug posted it doesn't look like it will be too much trouble.

Has anyone done White Rim trail. Looks really long, but some different scenery. I guess it starts off Schaffer switch backs?  Wondering if it can be done in a day?  :dunno:

Looks easy enough to drive the truck instead the Jeep.

Pretty sure that is an over-night distance requiring a permit. Depending on spring rainfall there could be some challenging washouts. We've never driven it farther than Muscleman Arch I think it was.

Yeah off the Arch spot on Schaeffer.  I read (maybe in the Moab book) that it's a minimum 2 day and permit required.  I'm pretty certain that you can see parts of the trail from the overlook in Canyon Lands.

The switchbacks are definitely on the easy side, we ran that trail two years ago in Sean's truck after I broke my shit.

Not that it's not worth doing, it's certainly scenic and you skip the admission gate to Canyonlands, it's a good sight seeing day.

From full size invasion Facebook post.  Wow.  Randyís favorite trail.  Must be a Toyota thing, one rolled while we were on the trail last year .(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191202/1960592fed44aef1b1b96d7273642a5f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191202/badfe8cd74e43b5485ff036976b6c4c3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191202/dd73c9c2bc72656c5521804928349804.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191202/3f20bf109a9615a6af283a20780a2010.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191202/e886180b9ac1f2bfabdc7448b9f46965.jpg)

 :shaking: :shaking: :shaking:

He must have majorly taken his eye's off the trail to do that below the crack.  :dunno: The off camber stuff above Z turn is what freaked me out!

Btw... it's Tim's favorite trail too.

Lol. Same as all the rolls/flops on Hells gate! It's all about knowing and taking the right line. Crawl the line... easy peezy. Miss the line and test your roll bar.   :flipoff:
