700R4 fluid change
« on: May 29, 2014, 04:52:32 PM »

The ATF in my truck has lost its red coloring and is starting to smell burned. How should I go about fixing this without doing a total flush? I've read that a flush can damage an old transmission.

Should I drain the pan, then refill, run for a while and drain again. The second time I was thinking of changing the filter and pan gasket too.

Are there other options?

yes drain it fill it back up drive it for 50-75 miles then drain it again and drop the pan and swap the filter

also I would run a high mileage fluid in it, I have had swapped fluid before just standard maintenance, and had the bands in 3rd gear go out only a few weeks later, coincidence?? possibly but I have heard that standard fluids can cause failure

Yeah, it's risky when you put nice new slippery juice in an old trans. I've seen YouTube of someone pulling the cooler line after changing the fluid and filter then watching it pump through till the clean stuff came out. That way, you change what is left in the torque converter and the cooler too. Just don't let it go low when it is running. I've been putting off flushing my new RV for fear the old gritty shit is the only thing preventing it from slipping. Gotta do it though!

Usually once the fluid has changed color if you flush it you got about a month before it starts slipping I've had two do it also multiple people have it happen..

I've heard that, but I like to think that it's not too late for this whole truck. The transmission repair will cost more than the truck.

Well if your mechanically inclined and can read a book there fairly easy to rebuild and kit is around 200 bucks or so.... but if you were to drop the pan and change the filter topping off with fresh fluid shouldn't hurt it..

Yeah, I don't know if I want to do a full flush, just a freshening up.

I've read you can just hook a hose up to it and wash all the crap out.

Personally, I'd just drop the pan replace the filter and fill it back up.

A lot of the service places are doing the pump out thing and never dropping the pan or changing the filter.  That doesn't seem like such a great idea to me.

It took 4. There is a crossmember I had to remove and I made a huge mess. I got to mess with my first cork gasket. Will check for leaks tomorrow.
