2004 Sahara - Green Dream
« on: June 11, 2016, 07:19:11 PM »

I need to do a lot to the wrangler to get it back up to speed.

First is the transmission. I smoked it by flat towing out of gear for 200 miles. The bearings are screaming.

I started pulling the transmission today. Had to pull all the skids. The ucf skids held up well. The transmission mount did not. This is what was left of the shock absorber.

I got almost all the bolts out of the transmission today. Will pull it tomorrow. I got a line on a guy here that will rebuild it for $150 plus parts.

If think that was bad, wait until you try putting it back in. At least you have a tranny jack.

If you wouldn't mind sending it, I could use it. I have the 2004 tj service manual but I don't think it gets into the rebuild. If it looks too complex, I will have a local guy rebuild it.

So I ordered another transmission from Smartpartsauto.com due to the good deal I got on the nv4500. The rebuild guy was quoting me $1000 and this was an improved rebuild for $1200.

I haven't gotten any feedback from undercover fab on the transmission mount. I'm thinking of building an independent crossmember instead. I want to get the transmission as low as possible in the skid. The skid I have has mounting points in there. I guess my real question is does a transmission skid plate need stiffening bars across or will a 3/16 plate be enough?
This is what I have. http://www.undercoverfab.com/transfer-case-skid-plates/53-hd-transfer-case-skid-plate-for-03-06-jeep-wrangler-tj-lj-carbon-high-clearance.html

They make a diy one also that works with any drivetrain. It doesn't have the stiffening channel.

I called them back today and talked to the owner. He said the rubber isn't essential unless I'm getting vibes in reverse. Either way, he offered to send me a couple replacement pads for the cost of shipping. Matt from undercover fabrication is a good guy. He's also only about 3 hours from me now that I live in Alabama.

Yeah, this thing still isn't done. I cleaned up the skids today and am getting them ready for paint.
