I'm maxed out on my vacation time so I have to take the time off or I loose it, so I'm still planning and getting ready as if I'm going. It's easier for me to cancel at the last minute than try and pack at the last minute. Fall would be awesome if I can pull it off. I have my Elk hunting trip in Nov. so I'll have to see if I can swing that much time back to back.

Although I've never been fully committed to this trip, if Moab does open and gas is still cheap I would probably go. I did a fall trip once. Weather was nice but snow capped mountains and flower blooms were gone.

edit: $1.15/gallon regular in Salina, still $2.09 in Delta (the farthest I can reach on a tank)

I'm taking my scheduled vacation regardless.  Worst case I get a bunch of crap at the house done.  I have plenty of time to take more in September.

I just got diesel fuel today @ a local Indian casino station... $2.19.oo!!!     That's lower than the cheapest place in Texas we drove thru last year! Wonder how long it will last?

Of course after everything clears, they'll prolly triple it to make up the difference!

I guess we'll wait and see what happens May 4th with Moab and then make a decision.  :dunno:

Camping still restricted.  Ken's Lake is closed, however other dispersed camping in San Juan County is supposedly open.  I don't know where that would be though, except two places near Blanding which is way to far.

I sent the Moab BLM field office an email to see if they have a projected re-opening date for Ken's.

My email to BLM and their response.....

Me:
I have a quick question for you about Ken's Lake campground.  I understand Grand County still has camping restrictions but San Juan county is currently allowing camping.  Is there a current projected date for re-opening Ken's Lake campground?

We have scheduled a trip where we were to arrive mid May, I'm just trying to see if this is still possible or if we need to change our plans.

BLM:
BLM Campgrounds in the canyon country district are closed. In Grand County all camping is closed. Sorry to say you will need to make some changes to your plans.

Commercial campgrounds open and public lands open for day use but Canyonlands NP is still closed.
Oh well, looks like Sept/Oct. for this trip unless Covid-19 spikes in Moab.

Yeah, looks like the fall for Moab.   :jeep:

Well, if the USFS doesn't use covid as an excuse to keep local trails closed, maybe you guys can come down for a long weekend and we can run Swamp! Maybe late mid/late July or early Aug?  :cheers2:

Read another article that said Grand County will keep camping restrictions until the National Parks re-open.  I'm sure BLM is on the same timeline.

Oh well, Sept it is.

I checked some pricing and availability and doubt the low fuel prices will offset the cost of using commercial campgrounds.

Dang... I see a black YJ waaaaay in the back of the pack. Prolly b/c it could'nt steer very good and came limping up in the rear!

Yeah, the RV places are hecka ridiculous on their tent camping prices, let alone RV sites... but the tourists pay it I guess. They're usually pretty full at the times we go.

This virus is smart as hell, it'll kill you if you're camping but you're fine if you pay the big dollars to stay somewhere.  Bet that's driven by TOT (Transient Occupancy Tax) that's what hotels and the like pay to the City/County built into your stay price.

My backpacking exit date is around 9/2 and I would need a week at home to catch up with stuff.  :ballchain: I have premium camping reservations with family 9/24-29.  9/9-20 could work for me or I would stagger from your dates. Oct is wide open.

I think the problem with the fall is time off for people.  Sean has an Elk hunting trip at the end of Oct in to Nov so it'll be hard for him to get time there.  Although if not too cold, Oct works best for me.  I think we just need to hash it out.
